Another aspect is, when you bench press all that you are doing is coordinating the efforts of your chest muscles, triceps and shoulders since the parts of your body are in a resting position. Whereas, when you do a push up as part of a bodyweight workout, you are balancing your body above the floor. This requires you to work your lower back, abs, legs and rotator cuffs in order to stabilize every time you do a push up. No wonder, a push up is much tougher than a bench press. If you are looking to burn more calories then the push ups are a much better option than the bench press.
