Students must be prepared to take the ACT exam with little or no previous testing experience. The process is similar to most standardized tests, with a few exceptions. In fact, students should take the ACT less than once every four years.

In the Reasoning section, students are required to answer multiple choice questions. The questions typically cover basic concepts, such as the meaning of words and the definition of numbers. Students are encouraged to write essays and questions in order to understand and learn. Some questions, however, include essay examples.

Students may choose to take the ACT at their local college or university. However, because the testing takes place at the college or university, it is not an official standardized examination. Students are required to submit supplemental work such as essays or other supplemental materials if they wish to take the test at the school.
